Take Part From Anywhere

You can be a part of Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawaiʻii even if you won’t be at Ala Moana Beach during the ceremony.

Learn about all the ways you can participate, whether you’re local or from anywhere in the world.

Collective Remembrance Lanterns

Collective Remembrance Lanterns are the original wood-framed lanterns made by Shinnyo practitioners in the early years of the event.

If you won’t be physically present to float an Individual Lantern at the 6:30 p.m. ceremony, or prefer not to physically float your own lantern, you may choose to write a remembrance for your loved ones to be included on the Collective Remembrance Lanterns instead.

Volunteers will affix your remembrances onto the Collective Remembrance Lanterns, and float them on the water from canoes during the ceremony.

To submit a message for a Collective Remembrance Lantern, you may choose from the following options:

  • In-person until Thursday, May 21, 2026:
Visit the Shinnyo-en Hawaii temple located at 2348 S. Beretania St. to write your remembrance on a lantern paper. Please check the temple website for hours.

  • In-person on Memorial Day (Mon, May 25, 2026) at Ala Moana Beach:
Visit the Collective Remembrance Tent between 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. to write your remembrance on a lantern paper.

  • Online (until Sunday, May 24, 2026 11:59pm HST):
Submit your remembrance online.

Online submissions received by April 30 will be hand-transcribed for you by volunteers; afterwards, they will be printed and affixed to a lantern.

All online messages received before midnight will be included on a lantern and floated during the ceremony.
