Take Part in the Ceremony

Collective Remembrance Lanterns

Collective Remembrance Lanterns are the original wood-framed lanterns made by Shinnyo practitioners in the early years of the event. Volunteers float these lanterns onto the water from canoes during the ceremony.

People who cannot, or prefer not, to float an Individual Lantern in person may submit a remembrance for the Collective Remembrance Lanterns.

To write a remembrance to be attached to a Collective Remembrance Lantern:

  • WHEN: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Mon 5/26.
  • WHERE: Collective Rembrance Tent at Ala Moana Beach. See map below for location.

If you will not be physically present at the ceremony, you are welcome to submit your remembrance ahead of time, and it will be affixed to a Collective Remembrance Lantern for you:

  • In-person: Until Thursday, May 22, 2025, visit the Shinnyo-en Hawaii temple located at 2348 S. Beretania St. to write your remembrance. Please check the temple website for hours.
  • Online: Until Sunday, May 25, 2025 11:59pm HST, you may submit your remembrance online. Online submissions received by 4/30 will be hand-transcribed for you by volunteers; afterwards, they will be printed.

People with disabilities may choose to write their remembrances at the Special Needs tent. Please see the Accessibility Information page for details.
