Accessibility Information for People with Disabilities
We welcome everyone to participate in the Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawaiʻi ceremony at Ala Moana Beach! The following accommodations are available to people with disabilities.
Please feel free to contact us ahead of the ceremony, if you have additional questions.
Accessible Parking:
Parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis to persons possessing a disability parking permit at the Magic Island parking lot. See the map below.
Please show BOTH your placard or special license plate AND the corresponding Disabled Person’s Parking Identification Card.
Lantern and remembrance requests:
A dedicated tent marked “Special Needs” will be available 10am-4pm to assist anyone with disabilities. Please show your Disabled Person’s Parking Identification Card.
It is located along Ala Moana Park Drive, across the street from the L&L concession stand on the Diamond Head side of the beach.
Those with disabilities may access this tent to write remembrances for the Collective Remembrance Lanterns that are floated from canoes by our volunteers. If you would like to receive an Individual Lantern to float yourself, you may also request one here, but please note that if you are not capable of safely floating an Individual Lantern into the water, you must bring a companion to assist in floating the lantern for you. Our volunteers are unable to provide assistance with physically floating lanterns into the water.
Ceremony attendance and floating area:
A designated access path along the beach to the floating area will be available for persons with disabilities.
Due to limited space, we ask that each person with a disability be accompanied by no more than two others, so that other participants may also be accommodated.
Please be aware that, for the safety of both participants and volunteers, our volunteers are unable to physically assist you with placing your lantern in the water, so you are strongly encouraged to participate with a companion as needed. Another meaningful option is to write a remembrance for the special wood-framed Collective Remembrance Lanterns, which are floated from canoes by volunteers during the ceremony. Please consult the Special Needs Tent for information on these options.
