Individual Lanterns to Personally Float

Those wanting to personally float a lantern during the ceremony may receive a single Individual Lantern per family or group on a first-come, first-served basis at the Lantern Request Tent at Ala Moana Beach on the event day.

Lantern Request Tent hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or until all the lanterns are gone.

  • All lantern parts are given in a carrying bag. Quiet space is provided for writing remembrances and assembling the lantern. Pens are provided in the tent.
  • There is no cost to receive a lantern. Voluntary donations received at Ala Moana Beach are gifted to the City & County of Honolulu Department of Parks & Recreation for the upkeep and beautification of Ala Moana Regional Park.
  • Feel free to write, draw or affix photos or images to the paper provided for the lantern, but please refrain from writing, drawing or puncturing the foam lantern base. We refurbish each lantern for use in future years.
  • Due to potential fire hazards and to ensure the safety of our volunteers who retrieve the lanterns, please do not attach any items to the lantern. For environmental and fire safety reasons, we discourage adorning lanterns with lei.

Please have aloha for others who would also like the opportunity to remember their loved ones. Sharing one lantern per family or party will make it more likely for as many who would like to float a lantern to receive one. Many names and messages can be carried on a single lantern and the experience of sharing this lantern with your family and friends can add to the feeling of empathy and compassion that we hope to create through this ceremony.

For other ways to participate in the ceremony, please see the Take Part page for additional information.
