Take Part at Ala Moana Beach

If you would like to participate in Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawaiʻi in person, you may choose to either float your own Individual Lantern or write a message to be included on a Collective Remembrance Lantern, which will be added to remembrances from all over the world, and will be floated for you by volunteers on canoes during the ceremony.

If you choose to float your own lantern, you must be able to pick up your lantern earlier in the day and stay to float it during the ceremony at 6:30pm.

Float a Lantern

If you would like to float a lantern during the 6:30 p.m. ceremony, request an Individual Lantern at the beach.

Please note there are NO advanced reservations. Lanterns are only available at the beach on event day.

Members of the military community may use the line reserved for military personnel and their dependents.

To float an Individual Lantern:

  1. Request a lantern: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or until lanterns are gone, at the Lantern Request Tent at Ala Moana Beach.
  2. Float the lantern: During the 6:30pm ceremony

First-come, first-served, one per family or group. There is no charge to receive a lantern.

View Guidelines for Assembling Your Lantern.

You must be present during the 6:30 p.m. ceremony to float your lantern.

If you will not be able to stay for the ceremony, you may instead write a message on a Collective Remembrance Lantern.

Please share one Individual Lantern per family or friend group, so that everyone at the ceremony gets the chance to remember their loved ones. There is plenty of space for writing multiple remembrances on each lantern.

Those who cannot or choose not to float an Individual Lantern may consider writing a remembrance for the Collective Remembrance Lanterns.

Lantern Assembly Guidelines

Watch the video to make sure your lantern is ready to float.

Your lantern parts will come in a carrying bag. Quiet space, with tables and pens, are provided for writing remembrances and assembling the lantern.

Here are some additional tips:

  • Feel free to write, draw or affix photos or images to the paper provided for the lantern.
  • Firmly crease the edges/folds of the paper before securing it to the lantern base, to ensure a solid foundation.
  • Please refrain from writing on, drawing on, or puncturing the foam lantern base. We refurbish each lantern for future use.
  • Please don’t attach any items to the lantern. It creates a fire hazard for the volunteers who retrieve the lanterns after the event.
  • For environmental and safety reasons, we strongly discourage adorning lanterns with lei.
  • If, after receiving a lantern, you find that you are missing a piece or having issues with any of your lantern parts, please visit the Information Tent.

Dedicated Line for Military Personnel

As part of our long-standing commitment to honoring and supporting our military community, we will have a dedicated line at the Lantern Request Tent (hours) for individuals with military identification. We want to recognize the sacrifices and service of our armed forces while providing a meaningful way for them to participate in this cherished event.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Military ID Requirement: Participants must present a valid military identification card (CAC, USID, or Legacy ID) to access the dedicated line.
  • Active Duty, National Guard, Reservists, Retirees, Veterans, and Dependents: The dedicated line is open to all Active-duty, National Guard, Reserves service members, Retirees, Veterans and their immediate family members (dependents).

To better assist you, we suggest that military service members with disabilities make use of the Special Needs tent to receive a lantern, instead of the military line at the Lantern Request Tent.

Together, let us reflect, remember, and celebrate the dedication of our service members and their families.

Accessibility

We welcome everyone to participate in the ceremony at Ala Moana Beach. The following accommodations are available to people with disabilities.

Please feel free to contact us ahead of the ceremony, if you have additional questions.

Accessible Parking

Parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis to persons possessing a disability parking permit at the Magic Island parking lot. Please see the map.

Please show BOTH your placard or special license plate AND the corresponding Disabled Person’s Parking Identification Card.

Map showing location of accessible resources. Accessible parking is located in the Magic Island parking lot. There is an accessible area for floating your lantern closer to the stage side of the beach near Magic Island. Additionally, there's a tent for Special Needs assistance along Ala Moana Park Dr, across the street from the L&L concessions.

Lantern and Remembrance Requests

A dedicated tent marked “Special Needs” will be available 10am-4pm to assist anyone with disabilities. Please show your Disabled Person’s Parking Identification Card.

It is located along Ala Moana Park Drive, across the street from the L&L concession stand on the Diamond Head side of the beach.

Those with disabilities may access this tent to write remembrances for the Collective Remembrance Lanterns that are floated from canoes by our volunteers.

If you would like to receive an Individual Lantern to float yourself, you may also request one here, but please note that if you are not capable of safely floating an Individual Lantern into the water, you must bring a companion to assist in floating the lantern for you. Our volunteers are unable to provide assistance with physically floating lanterns into the water.

Ceremony Attendance and Floating Area

A designated access path along the beach to the floating area will be available for persons with disabilities.

Due to limited space, we ask that each person with a disability be accompanied by no more than two others, so that other participants may also be accommodated.

Please be aware that, for the safety of both participants and volunteers, our volunteers are unable to physically assist you with placing your lantern in the water, so you are strongly encouraged to participate with a companion as needed. Another meaningful option is to write a remembrance for the special wood-framed Collective Remembrance Lanterns, which are floated from canoes by volunteers during the ceremony. Please consult the Special Needs Tent for information on these options.
