Since Memorial Day, 1999, Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawaiʻi has been annually observed first at Keʻehi Lagoon and then at Ala Moana Beach. Every year, Her Holiness Shinso has conducted rites wishing for the happiness of all beings, past, present, and future. Elements of ceremony include reciting a prayer and offering food and water to all in the past, blessing the lanterns, and the ringing of the bell before the lanterns are released.

Since 2020, it has been observed in alternate formats in line with the intention and spirit of connecting people through shared experiences. This year, we are observing Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawaiʻi in the following ways:

May 27 – June 5, 2022

With social distancing and safe participation as a priority, a 30-minute in-person interactive experience will be offered on the grounds of Shinnyo-en Hawaii.

Participants will have an opportunity to write remembrances, prayers, and commitments to positive action on lanterns to float in a water feature on site.

Float Your Virtual Lantern (coming soon)

Beginning in April, you’ll be able to write your remembrances and commitments to positive action that will appear on a virtual lantern to float on this page. You are welcomed to submit messages ahead of the start of virtual floating (TBA in April) and we will resubmit your messages onto a virtual lantern.
